Rahu Workshop 11-18 April 2021

The story of Martanda indicates the particular Role of Rahu in Creation. Shloka 8 below can be understood as "abandon from Mother", but also as “protection from gods”. Martanda was, perhaps, Aditi's hidden, “Special Project”. This is not to be seen under the reference system of human emotions, but under the reference of the universal, multiple Potentiality of possibilities: if seven possibilities were to be treated with “special, divine motherly care”, perhaps the 8th Possibility was also needed - to implement the cycles of death and rebirth in our existence.

Mandala 10 Hymn 72 Rigveda: Story of Martanda 1. LET US with tuneful skill proclaim these generations of the Gods, That one may see them when these hymns are chanted in a future age.

2. These Brahmanaspati produced with blast and smelting, like a Smith,

Existence, in an earlier age of Gods, from Non-existence sprang.

3. Existence, in the earliest age of Gods, from Non-existence sprang.

Thereafter were the regions born. This sprang from the Productive Power.

4. Earth sprang from the Productive Power the regions from the earth were born.

Daksa was born of Aditi, and Aditi was Daksa's Child.

5. For Aditi, O Daksa, she who is thy Daughter, was brought forth.

After her were the blessed Gods born sharers of immortal life.

6. When ye, O Gods, in yonder deep close clasping one another stood,

Thence, as of dancers, from your feet a thickening cloud of dust arose.

7. When, O ye Gods, like Yatis, ye caused all existing things to grow,

Then ye brought Surya forward who was lying hidden in the sea.

8. Eight are the Sons of Adid who from her body sprang to life.

With seven she went to meet the Gods she cast Martanda far away.

9. So with her Seven Sons Aditi went forth to meet the earlier age.

She brought Martanda thitherward to spring to life and die again.”

In Taittirîya Aranyaka we find the following specification: "She set aside Martanda for birth and death”. The same source gives us further indications of the 8 sons of Aditi (not 7!): Mitra, Varuna, Dhâtṛi, Aryaman, Amsha, Bhaga, Indra, Vivasvat. The name of the 8th Son, Vivasvat, may be very well an indicator of (the other half of) Martanda, since Viva = alive & Marta = dead => this might be Rahu, the son who is both dead and alive!

Some specialised, expert opinions in the field support the idea that Vivasvat should not be seen as a deity, but as the ancestor of human beings (Kasyapa?). Yet, Vivasvat is often identified (wrongly) with Surya!

Vivasvat (the Other Sun/ the "other son!") is described in Rig Veda as a god of light – but only governing the beginning of the light, the half of the Rising Sun. We can see a dual dimension of Surya, with complementary functions, in our world.

Rig Veda presents Vivasvat as a mortal being, marrying the daughter of Tvastar named Saranyu. “A fake Saranyu is made, either by the gods or by the real Saranyu. The latter runs away in the form of a mare and Vivasvat unites with the two. From the Saranyu, mare, are born the Ashwins, gods close to men, and from the false Saranyu Manu is born, or the first man (as compared to Adam).[wikipedia]” –

However, each time we catch a “link”, the Feminine Half seems to elude. In this particular context, we find in other sources that Vivasvat and Saranyu (in her double Form) had created the following:

· Ashwins (indication: Ketu is ruling Ashwini Nakshatra – which has a double nature / double faced entity, double head story, the aim to obtain “equality” with gods by accessing Soma etc)

· Yama and Yami (again, twinning energies) – from ancient texts we know more about Yama: he is the god of death and of Dharma, brother of Lord Shani, god of life, longevity and Karma. Yami therefore is Shani/Saturn with a Feminine Nature?)

· Manu (first human, again, dual in Man and Woman Frames).

As much as Vivasvat is “the other Sun” (with a different kind of energy, designed not to “burn Samjna”), Saranyu is “the other Moon” (the half seen on Earth – lit by Rahu – or active in couple with “her husband Vivasvat” in the areas of existence ruled by “their sons”: Ashwins, Yama and Manu). This is how both “North Node of the Moon” and “South Node of the Moon” could be explained.

We know from Vedic sources that there are contradictory indications such as “Ketu only is eclipsing the Moon” or “Rahu is afflicting the Moon” or “Rahu only is having the power to eclipse the Sun and the Moon” etc. But, in Brihat Parāśara Hora Shastra we are instructed very clearly about the Power of Rahu, as 2 times the Sun – therefore double as powerful, in terms of Energy. This may lead us to the conclusion that Rahu is, in fact, the Central Sun of our universe (double in power) whereas Surya is “the shadow Sun” – endowed with reduced energy by the divine architect Tvastar. The current Sun (as seen from Earth) may be a shadow (reduced) sun, whereas the current Moon (as we see from Earth) may be the real, original creation and her “shadow” may be nothing else than the entity coded “Ketu”.
